Having begun on 12 August 2008, the International Casino Games is picking up speed and rocketing towards February of next year, serving up incredible promotions that will lead to a voyage down the Iberian coast.

The venue will be the gorgeous 5-star Grand Princess luxury cruise-liner, and a chance to win one of four 50,000 euro grand-prizes.

With the halfway mark nearing, players are encouraged to still join in while the event is gathering speed. Already, over USD 125,000 in cold hard cash has been won, as well as more than 50 tickets to the finals aboard the cruise-liner. The promotions will be running until the last week of February 2009, with more tickets and rewarding promotions smoothing the way.

Any and all players are welcome to join in the fun and games. The participants who secure a place aboard the Grand Princess will receive a package that includes a 7-night stay and access to all the wonderful facilities one can expect from such a vessel: three separate pools, bars, restaurants and theatres running nightly shows. All of this is underscored as well by the chance to be present at the final event, competing for one of the four 50,000 euro grand-prizes.

Cosmo Raymond says that helping his blackjack- and poker-dealer students understand that they audition for a dealer's position, rather than interview for it, is a big part of his job at the ABC Bartending and Casino School in Tempe.

"Basically, you're taking money out of the customers' pocket, and you want them to be happy about it," Raymond said.

His students sit at green baize-covered gambling tables, listening to instructors and practicing dealing.

"That means as a dealer you have to be friendly, engaging, likable . . . your personality is what makes you a good dealer," Raymond said. "And when you go for a job, they want to see that personality."

There are 345 poker dealers and 792 blackjack dealers working in Arizona casinos, according to Arizona Department of Gaming spokeswoman Seena Simon. Most casinos pay dealers minimum wage, so if they don't get generous tips, they won't make much of a living.

Raymond came to the school as a student after he retired from the food-broker business. He bought the school, which has been in business for about six years, six months ago.

"It was successful already and interested me a lot . . . and it has been a lot of fun," Raymond said.

Raymond says that while teaching students the mechanics of dealing is pretty easy, operating a "charm school" is a lot harder.

Raymond says former student Ali Mithaiwala is a perfect example of what a dealer should be: "Excellent with the mechanics, of course, but a funny, fun, nice guy," Raymond said. "We talk a lot to our students, work with them, about being personable, but the best dealers are like Ali. He got that aspect of the business and has worked on it."

Mithaiwala stops by the school at 5024 S. Ash Ave. often. He now is a pit boss at Fort McDowell Casino, /and although he spends less time dealing cards at work, he returns to the school to keep his dealing skills sharp.

"A good dealer helps customers out - shows them that, typically, they shouldn't take a hit when the dealer has 13 or 14. A dealer has to hit up to 17 and when he's holding a low hand it's likely he'll bust," Mithaiwala said. "I tell customers things like that, and it makes the play more profitable and fun for them, and they appreciate it. And come back."

While casinos are big business in Arizona, that revenue has been falling in recent months.

Tribal contributions to the state from gaming in Arizona fell more than 9 percent, to $25 million, in the quarter ended Sept. 30. Those contributions reflect casino earnings since tribes are required to give 1 percent to 8 percent of their gross gaming revenue to the state.

Slowing business has meant that there's a hiring freeze for dealers at some casinos, Raymond said. But his students aren't just looking for jobs locally, he said.

Raymond said his school teaches not only the games that are played in Arizona casinos, like blackjack, Pai Gow and poker, but also roulette, baccarat, and craps, which aren't in Arizona gambling houses.

"We've had students from England, France, Sweden, Russia, Singapore . . . everywhere," he said. "We charge local students a flat fee of $699 for poker dealing and $499 for blackjack dealing for about 60 hours of instruction. We offer international students an intense, 10-day dealer course for $1,099, which includes a hotel for nine nights and ground transportation to the school. We booked 354 nights at that hotel in the last year."

Sessions on dealing begin weekly, and, Raymond says, he has put about 600 students through his school in the past year. Raymond said that between 85 percent and 90 percent of his students get jobs shortly after they graduate.

ABC is one of two schools in the Valley that trains dealers.

ABC's bartending school charges students $399 for 40 hours of instruction in "mixology," and Raymond says he has much the same message for prospective bartenders that he has for would-be dealers:

"You have to be on stage to be successful," he said. "I tell bartenders they should make a point of learning at least one customer's name every day."

Raymond says that while good bartenders can make a good living, talented card dealers, can do very well.

Liz Reyes is a teacher at the school and says she tells students that, depending on their ability to engage customers, "they can make anywhere from $65,000 a year to $150,000."

"The better you connect with people, the more money you tend to make," she said.

Department of Gaming spokeswoman Simon said the background check for dealers is extensive. "We check for a criminal record, employment history, financial records, tax records - it's very, very complete and may take more than a month."

Once a prospective dealer gets his or her diploma and passes the background check, opportunity can await.

"You just have to remember it's your personality that's going to make you a success," Mithaiwala said. "We're not just card dealers; we're performers, too."

LAS VEGAS—Station Casinos is laying off 40 workers who take reservations for the company's hotels and will begin outsourcing the work to an overseas company in early December, a spokeswoman confirmed.

The Station Casinos workers, who take reservations for all 11 of the neighborhood casino operator's hotels, will leave Dec. 8 after receiving six weeks notice.

Company spokeswoman Lori Nelson said the layoffs were being made for operational reasons and were unrelated to the economic downturn.

"It was based on the most effective way to manage our reservation call-system needs," Nelson told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Nelson said the company is working to find the workers positions at other Station Casinos properties or other companies. Any worker who has not found a job by Dec. 8 will receive 30 days salary.

As legal battles simmer regarding poker's status as a game of skill, a new wave of websites is designed to allow online poker play while meeting even the most stringent of state and national laws. ZOSOZ launched its new site, a combination of social network and poker tournaments, last week.

The new model addresses the widely accepted definition of what constitutes illegal gambling. That rule includes consideration, usually money, from players, reward in varying amounts to participants, and luck rather than skill employed in selection of winners.

While most poker enthusiasts, and the Poker Players Alliance, will insist that poker avoids the random luck clause by being a game of skill, ZOSOZ has also removed the consideration.

Rather than buy into a tournament, players pay a monthly subscription fee, which gives them access to the site's tournaments. The fee is paid to belong to the site, which also includes options like those of MySpace or Facebook. Playing the poker tourneys is free.

Tim Belisle, president of ZOSOZ, affirms that the site is packed with big rewards. "What makes ZOSOZ different from other online poker clubs is that we give away the most online poker tournament sweepstakes prizes annually -- daily $1,000 tournaments, weekly $10,000 tournaments, monthly $100,000 tournaments and a yearly $1 million tournament."

ZOSOZ also contains forums and chatrooms to learn how to play for novices, and learn to fine-tune one's game for experienced players. Belisle says, "ZOSOZ players have a great time participating in tournaments for huge prizes without being required to risk any hard-earned cash."

Governor Steve Beshear of Kentucky persists in pushing his case attempting to seize the domain names of online casinos. Despite a multitude of protests, from a range of parties, Judge Thomas Wingate has refused to dismiss this absurd order, instead demanding all 141 Internet gambling sites named in the complaint block services to Kentucky or face the loss of domain names.

Beshear has hidden behind the "protect the children" line, but the truth, as iMEGA president Ed Leyden said, is that this is a tax case, pure and simple. This is why Beshear has no problem with TwinSpires.com, an online horse racing and wagering site, as it pays Kentucky taxes.

Opponents have noted that online gaming sites are not regulated nor taxed by Kentucky because the state has not chosen to do so. Nevertheless, Beshear has announced his move as necessary to "protect (Kentucky's) signature industry", which is horse racing. He has also denounced online gambling as parasitic, and noted that "these sites deprive the Commonwealth of millions in revenue."

Sherman Bradley, senior gambling analyst at Online Casino Advisory, says Beshear's actions are myopic, unconstitutional, and illegally protectionist. Asked what concerned citizens can do while the legal mess unravels, Bradley said, "Boycotting Kentucky horse racing, and all Kentucky gambling, would be a great start. Hit Beshear where it counts, and matters to him, in the wallet.

Online Casino Tropez recently introduced two new exclusive slot machines, namely Wild Spirit and Silent Samurai.

Silent Samurai, a 5-reel 9-line video slot and Wild Spirit, a 5-reel 20-line slot are two new and exclusive games to the online gaming world.

As well as the latest cutting edge graphics, Silent Samurai features Scatter symbols and a bonus round where players throw Shurikens (throwing stars) to fight off an army of 20 fierce ninja warriors.
